Bordering the south bank of the Fraser
River, north of Highway 1, the historic village of Fort Langley was built
as a small fur trading post in 1827, leading to the creation of the colony of
British Columbia. Southeast of
Vancouver, a mild climate allows for a vast array of year-round activities,
such as kayaking and cycling. Situated along the Salmon and Fraser river banks,
visitors can play the 18-hole Fort
Langley Golf Course or explore the scenic hiking trails in Fort
Langley Marina Park and Derby
Reach Regional Park. Visit the world-class Thunderbird
Show Park to enjoy the horse jumping championships in this part of the Langley
Township. Fort Langley is also home to the Fort
Langley Historic Site of Canada and the historic Fort
Langley Community Hall, built in 1931. Antique shops, restaurants and museums
line the main street, Glover Road. Railway enthusiasts will be keen to visit
the Canadian
Northern Railway Museum, and experience the Annual
Railway Days in June. For those visitors wanting to unwind after a day of
history or antique shopping, there are five local wineries in the area, open
for tours and tastings. Visitors can learn of how Fort Langley was the first
major agricultural centre in British Columbia by taking a day trip to the BC
Farm Machinery and Agricultural Museum. The
Langley Centennial Museum will also provide interesting facts about the
history of the region.
